J.R.R Tolkien day Posted On 25 March 2021

R. R. Tolkien wrote one of the most beloved and well-read stories of anyone’s lifetimes, The Lord of the Rings

Held every year on the 25th March, which happens to be the exact day that the one ring was destroyed, today is an opportunity for people around the world to celebrate the magic that Tolkien created. In this world of ours, you will be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn’t either read the books, watched the films or at least heard of Frodo and his fellowship’s mammoth adventures in Middle Earth or Bilbo’s earlier adventures in The Hobbit.

R. R. Tolkien has inspired and continues to inspire storytellers all over the world. He was a close friend of C. S. Lewis who wrote the Narnia and during his life was an academic, a poet, a philologist as well as an author. After he died, his son carried on his legacy releasing unpublished works about Middle Earth including the Magnus-opus that is The Silmarillion.

Without Tolkien, our world be one with no hobbits, no fantasy, no Gandalf, no Sam and Frodo, quite simply, if it wasn’t for Tolkien, modern fantasy literature wouldn’t be what it is today. In 2008, The Times ranked him sixth on a list of “The 50 greatest British writers since 1945” and he was ranked by Forbes as the fifth top-earning “dead celebrity” in 2009.

Today people celebrate the great man’s life by sharing their favourite quote from one of his works and here are ours, which we think are apt for these times…

“All that is gold does not glitter,

Not all those who wander are lost;

The old that is strong does not wither,

Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,

A light from the shadows shall spring;

Renewed shall be blade that was broken,

The crownless again shall be king.”

And:

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.

“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

Both quotes are from The Fellowship of the Ring.
